LESC Education Topics

Educational Equity

Every child, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves the same chance to succeed in school and life. Equity in education means ensuring all students have the support and resources they need to learn and reach their goals. In July 2018, Judge Sarah Singleton issued a ruling in the Martinez-Yazzie educational sufficiency lawsuit, finding the state had failed to meet its constitutional obligation to provide an adequate, sufficient education to economically disadvantaged students, English learners (ELs), Native American students, and students with disabilities. Since then, the state has invested nearly $1 billion to improve programming and increase access for all students. Despite these large investments, it remains unclear whether New Mexico’s students, and particularly those named in the lawsuit, are any better off. As New Mexico continues work to improve the equitability of education across the state, LESC staff will help elevate the stories of students most alienated by the educational system, offering policies and budget recommendations designed to build an educational system for all.

2024 Interim Priorities

  • Explore the concept of educational sovereignty. LESC staff will gain a better understanding of how tribal nations maintain control and autonomy over the education of their members, ensuring they align with their cultural and traditional values while navigating historical influences and modern standards.

  • Gain insight into the status of homeless and foster students. LESC staff will study the unique challenges faced by homeless and foster students, informing the state’s efforts to provide tailored support and resources for their academic success and well-being.
