REQUESTING THE STATE HIGHWAY COMMISSION TO INCLUDE RESURFACING OF NEW MEXICO STATE HIGHWAY 264 FROM YAH-TA-HEY TO THE STATE LINE IN ITS FIVE-YEAR PLAN.
WHEREAS, the state highway and transportation department is charged with the duty to plan, construct and maintain state highways; and
WHEREAS, the state highway commission identified state highway 264, between United States highway 666 and the New Mexico state line with Arizona, as a state highway in 1929; and
WHEREAS, between 1988 and 1991, state highway 264 was widened from two lanes to four lanes; and
WHEREAS, the last resurfacing was conducted in conjunction with the widening of state highway 264; and
WHEREAS, much of state highway 264 requires repair and resurfacing for the safety of travelers on that route; and
WHEREAS, the state highway and transportation department plans to level and overlay the six miles between mile marker one at United States highway 666 and mile marker six in the 1999-2000 fiscal year; and
WHEREAS, the remainder of state highway 264 is not scheduled for resurfacing in the state highway commission five-year plan;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state highway commission be requested to include the resurfacing of the entire stretch of state highway 264 from Yah-Ta-Hey to the New Mexico-Arizona state line in its five-year plan; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the chairman of the state highway commission, the secretary of highway and transportation and the Navajo nation department of transportation and roads.
