44TH LEGISLATURE - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - FIRST SESSION, 1999
EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES OF THE SENATE TO THE FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF JUDGE STEVE HERRERA.
WHEREAS, Judge Steve Herrera was the chief judge of the first district court in Santa Fe; and
WHEREAS, he died in a traffic accident on Interstate 25 in Albuquerque on Friday, August 14, 1998; and
WHEREAS, state Supreme Court Chief Justice Gene Franchini said, "We lost the heart of the judiciary of the state of New Mexico. He was the leader of the judiciary in the state";
and
WHEREAS, he was a former president of the first judicial district bar association; and
WHEREAS, he was first elected district judge in 1988 and retained by the voters in 1990 and 1996; and
WHEREAS, he was awarded the outstanding judicial service award by the state bar association in 1990; and
WHEREAS, he attended Pojoaque high school, received his bachelor's of arts degree from the university of New Mexico in 1971 and his law degree from the university of Denver in 1974; and
WHEREAS, he is survived by his wife Carol; his children Helena, Jesse, Donica and Daniel; his father and stepmother; his sister and four nieces and nephews; and many friends and admirers throughout the state;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that condolences be extended to the family and friends of Judge Steve Herrera, an outstanding and devoted New Mexican; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be transmitted to Carol Herrera.
