A JOINT MEMORIAL

REQUESTING THE NEW MEXICO VETERANS' SERVICE COMMISSION TO COORDINATE DONATIONS SO AS TO PROVIDE A MEMORIAL PLAQUE HONORING NEW MEXICO'S WOMEN VETERANS AND SERVICEWOMEN.



WHEREAS, New Mexico's servicewomen and women veterans have answered the call to serve and have done so with great sacrifice and dedication throughout the history of our state and our nation; and

WHEREAS, the United States congress has unanimously passed legislation authorizing the construction of a living memorial to honor the two million women veterans and the four hundred thousand women in active military service, the reserves and the national guard, as well as those who will serve in the future; and

WHEREAS, there are approximately ten thousand five hundred women veterans currently residing in the state who will be recognized in this national memorial; and

WHEREAS, the women's memorial will house a register, making it possible for all servicewomen to have a permanent, visible place in America's history, and will serve to illustrate women's partnership with men in the defense of our nation;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico veterans' service commission be asked to coordinate donations so as to purchase a plaque at the women in military service for America memorial at Arlington national cemetery to honor New Mexico's servicewomen and women veterans.
