44TH LEGISLATURE - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - FIRST SESSION, 1999
REQUESTING THAT FEBRUARY BE DESIGNATED AS NATIONAL TRIO MONTH AND THAT FEBRUARY 27, 1999 BE DESIGNATED AS NATIONAL TRIO DAY.
WHEREAS, 1999 marks the thirty-four year anniversary of TRIO programs throughout the nation; and
WHEREAS, TRIO programs refer to a family of grant programs sponsored by the United States department of education; and
WHEREAS, TRIO programs include educational talent search, upward bound, student support services, educational opportunity centers and Ronald McNair; and
WHEREAS, TRIO programs were created in 1965 by the Higher Education Act of 1965, which also created federal financial aid, headstart and other programs designed to extend access to higher education to all Americans;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February be recognized as national TRIO month and that February 27, 1999 be recognized as national TRIO day; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the state department of public education.
