RECOGNIZING THE MEN AND WOMEN OF THE FRIENDS OF THE CUMBRES AND TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD, INCORPORATED, FOR THEIR ROLE IN PRESERVING AND RESTORING THE CUMBRES AND TOLTEC SCENIC RAILROAD.
WHEREAS, for over ten years members of the friends of the Cumbres and Toltec scenic railroad, incorporated, have played a major role in the preservation and restoration of the former Denver and Rio Grande western narrow gauge railroad between Chama, New Mexico and Antonito, Colorado; and
WHEREAS, the friends now number over one thousand four hundred men and women from the United States and several foreign countries; and
WHEREAS, the friends have contributed their time, money and materials to rebuild, repair and paint the car inspector's house, the snowshed at Cumbres pass, historic freight cars, work equipment, section houses, bunkhouses and signs; and
WHEREAS, the friends have acquired and restored to historically accurate condition tank cars, stock cars and other freight and passenger cars that were once used on the old Denver and Rio Grande western line; and
WHEREAS, the friends have developed walking tours for sites along the line and published a tour brochure that is available free of charge to all visitors; and
WHEREAS, the friends have published books and conducted programs to educate the public about the history of the railroad;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the friends of the Cumbres and Toltec scenic railroad, incorporated, be recognized and applauded for their energy, effort and enthusiasm in restoring and repairing the Cumbres and Toltec scenic railroad; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the friends of the Cumbres and Toltec scenic railroad, incorporated, be recognized and commended for their many contributions that have been vital to the preservation and promotion of the Cumbres and Toltec scenic railroad; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be transmitted to the president and officers of the friends of the Cumbres and Toltec scenic railroad, incorporated.
