SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Joint Memorial 16 requests the tobacco industry in New Mexico to mount a significant campaign to discourage the illegal sales of tobacco products to minors and to strongly encourage the tobacco retailers to keep tobacco products behind counters or out of reach of persons prohibited to purchase these products. Finally, the memorial requests that copies of SJM-16 be sent to the Taxation and Revenue Department for distribution to all tobacco wholesalers and to the Secretary of State for distribution to all lobbyists registered to represent the tobacco industry.
Significant Issues
There is an overwhelming concern by the legislature as evidenced by this memorial and SJM-3 about the sale of tobacco products to minors.
