SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 739 establishes an African-American Day on the second Friday of February.

Significant Issues

Senate Bill 739 proposes that the second Friday of February of each year be known as "African-American Day." The day would be observed by people of New Mexico in recognition of the contributions and sacrifices that African-Americans have made to ensure the right of all Americans so that they may be free and equal citizens and full participants in the governing of the state and nation. The day would be observed by the people of New Mexico in efforts and undertakings that celebrate the diversity of the cultural heritage of New Mexicans, recognizing that February is Black History Month and that are expressions in harmony with the general character of the day to be established.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

There would be no fiscal or administrative impact if Senate Bill 739 is enacted.

CONFLICT/DUPLICATION/COMPANIONSHIP/RELATIONSHIP

Senate Bill 739 duplicates House Bill 719.
