SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
This bill appropriates $150.0 to the Board of Regents of the New Mexico Highlands University for the purpose of funding the Native American access and retention initiative.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $150.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY00 shall revert to the general fund.
OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES
The program proposed in this bill seeks to improve the recruitment, retention, and graduation of Native American students. Currently, 208 Native Americans attend NMHU, 8% of the total student body. This is the highest percent of the state's four-year universities. To encourage enrollment, NMHU waives tuition for resident Navajo students and out-of-state tuition rates for non-resident Native Americans.
