SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 599 would amend Section 34-6-11 NMSA 1978 to change the way district judges are elected and reside in the Eighth Judicial District.

Significant Issues

The current statute provides for two district judges. One shall maintain a principal office in Taos County and the other shall maintain a principal office in Colfax County or Union County. Senate Bill 599 proposes that one judge must reside in Taos county and maintain a principal office there and the other must reside in and maintain a principal office in Colfax County or Union County.

In addition to the residence requirement, Senate Bill 599 would provide that district one judges shall be elected by Taos County voters only and that district two judges shall be elected by Colfax County and union County voters only.
