SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

This bill provides a general fund appropriation of $50.0 to the LGD to create a Regional Director position for the Southeast New Mexico Main Street Program.

Significant Issues

The Economic Development Department (department) currently administers the Main Street Program. Annually, approximately $250.0 is appropriated to the department to provide services to local governments participating in the Main Street Program. The LGD notes that no funding is provided to local governments to fund Main Street Program projects. "Most of the work put into the Main Street Program is provided by volunteers."

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

This bill makes a general fund appropriation of $50.0 to LGD for the purpose stated above. Unexpended or unencumbered balances remaining at the end of FY2000 revert to the general fund.

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS

Since the Economic Development Department (department) currently administers the Main Street Program, should the appropriation go to the department instead of the LGD at DFA?

This bill proposes to fund the position in FY2000. How would the positions be funded beyond FY2000?
