SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 555 appropriates $200,000 from the general fund to the New Mexico Office of Indian Affairs to contract with the Navajo Nation for emergency management services for areas of the Navajo Nation located in New Mexico.
Significant Issues
The New Mexico Office of Indian Affairs currently funds $300,000 for a similar emergency management program for areas of the Navajo Nation. The current year appropriation includes costs for personnel, office space and some emergency care and assistance services. According to the New Mexico Office of Indian Affairs and the Navajo Nation, the additional funding in Senate Bill 555 would be directed toward emergency care and assistance services. Due to the rural nature of the areas located within the Navajo Nation, without emergency services the response time for emergencies varies from hours to days. Passage of this bill will greatly enhance the emergency management capabilities and response time to the people of the Navajo Nation.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The Office of Indian Affairs would enter into a Joint Powers Agreement with the Navajo Nation to provide the services intended in Senate Bill 555.
CONFLICT/DUPLICATION/COMPANIONSHIP/RELATIONSHIP
House Bill 413 appropriates $500,000 for a similar program for emergency care and assistance services for Navajo Nation chapter houses located in McKinley and San Juan counties.
