SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

The bill appropriates $35.0 from the general fund to the State Department of Education (SDE) for expenditure in FY 2000 to contract for an after-school tutoring and arts program for elementary school students in Taos County. The project would also include a summer camp program for low income students in Taos County.

Any unencumbered balance remaining at the end of the fiscal year 2000 shall revert to the general fund.

Significant Issues

The State Board of Education supports before-and-after-school programs through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

Taos Municipal Schools were awarded $98,921 for the current school year through TANF funding for before-and-after- school programs.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

This legislation would create a new project for SDE to oversee. Staff time would be required to initiate a budget, review and verify reimbursement claims and/or cash requests and process voucher payments. SDE indicates that the current staff can handle the project.
