SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 506 appropriates 100.0 from the general fund to the Department of Health in FY 2000 for the purpose of funding a school-community health clinic pilot project for the purpose of facilitating dissemination of health information and administering influenza and hepatitis B immunizations. Unencumbered balances remaining at the end of the fiscal year revert to the general fund.

Significant Issues

School based health centers provide an inexpensive means of providing information and preventive health care to students in an environment that is comfortable and non-threatening.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The Department of Health has the necessary resources to fiscally manage this project.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

Administration of these monies is within the budgeted capacity of this department.

OTHER SUBSTANTIVE ISSUES

School based health care centers are low-cost alternatives that are gaining favor throughout the nation.

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS

1. How was the appropriation amount determined? Are there other schools that could benefit from such an approach?
