SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

The bill appropriates $300.0 from the general fund to the State Department of Education (SDE) for expenditure in FY 2000-2002 for the purpose on initiating a five-year program to develop a comprehensive NM history curriculum for use statewide in public schools. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2002 reverts to the GF.

Significant Issues

The curriculum shall accurately reflect the history of Native Americans , Hispanic Americans and other people that contributed to the NM culture.

The issue with the bill is the lack or availability of quality materials for the teaching of NM history. Support for the bill has grown over the years.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

School districts would benefit from having access to a model curriculum that could be adopted to their local district curriculum. The project is anticipated to cost more than the original appropriation

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

A new project would be created for SDE. SDE specifies that the current staff can handle the project and as the project grows additional staff will be required.
