SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
Senate Bill 490 appropriates $200,000 from the general fund to the New Mexico Office of Indian Affairs for contracting for youth programs that provide counseling, education, support and recreation services in Shiprock.
Significant Issues
The nearest locations for youth services such as counseling, recreation and other support services are in Farmington and Gallup, approximately an hour's drive from Shiprock. Access to badly needed youth programs is difficult due to distance, lack of transportation, and lack of community-based youth services.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The fiscal and administrative impact to the New Mexico Office of Indian Affairs would be minimal. The OIA would enter into a Joint Powers Agreement with the Navajo Nation or some other entity with youth program expertise to provide the services intended in Senate Bill 490.
