SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

The bill proposes to add a new section to the state's Per Diem and Mileage Act to allow the five elected commissioners of the Public Regulation Commission (PRC) to be reimbursed at the rates stipulated in the Act for up to four round trips a month from Santa Fe to each of their districts.

Significant Issues

Travel on official business to any city, excluding the residence of salaried public officers, is already reimburseable under the provisions of the Per Diem and Mileage Act.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The PRC indicates that if each commissioner traveled four times a month from Santa Fe to their city of residence (i.e., one commissioner lives in Santa Fe and his monthly trip was calculated to be to Taos), the estimated cost would be $19.6 in general fund beginning in FY2000.

The Senate Finance Committee has tentatively amended Senate Bill 2, the Senate's General Appropriation Act, to place an additional $11.3 in general fund in the budget for commissioners' travel in FY2000.
