SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 364 appropriates $30.0 to SDE to support and expand the Service Learning Program in Las Vegas and nearby communities.

Significant Issues

According to SDE, service learning programs can be implemented at any grade level and in any community. The program brings students in contact with the business community for meaningful applications of the learning that takes place in the classroom. It encourages students to practice skills to develop character and citizenship qualities and to improve communities. Service learning allows students to explore mentorships and possible career connections.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

Senate Bill 364 appropriates $30.0 from the general fund to SDE for expenditure in fiscal year 2000. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2000 shall revert to the general fund.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

SDE indicates that current staff can handle this project, however should a significant number of special projects be approved, the department would require additional staff.

CONFLICT/DUPLICATION/COMPANIONSHIP/RELATIONSHIP

Senate Bill 364 is related to House Bill 145 which provides $340.0 for statewide k-12 and higher education service learning.
