SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
This bill appropriates $820.0 for the purpose of increasing women's sports activities to comply with Title 9 of the federal Education Amendments of 1972 as follows: $300.0 each to the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University; $50.0 each to Western New Mexico University, Eastern New Mexico University, and New Mexico Highlands University; and $35.0 each to New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology and New Mexico Junior College.
Significant Issues
According to the CHE, Title IX requires gender equity in opportunities for participation in athletics. In order to move toward compliance, NMSU eliminated both men's track and swimming programs.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $820.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY00 shall revert to the general fund.
