SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 275 appropriates 75.0 from the general fund to the Department of Health for expenditure in FY 2000 to provide or contract for comprehensive community-based cancer patient support services in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties, including education, ono-on-one matching with cancer veterans, survivorship mentoring, patient library services and an annual conference.

Significant Issues

Cancer patients are in great need for support services. Appropriation of these monies would assist in acquiring these services for patients in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties. Other areas of the state however would not receive the benefits and would continue to try and find support where they could. In some instances, these types of services are simply not available.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

The Department of Health has an elaborate system of financial control and contracting and will be able to administer these contracts.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

Administration of these monies is within the budgeted capacity of the Department of Health.

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS

1. Are there plans to expand these services to other areas of the state? How was the 75.0 amount determined?
