Synopsis of SJC Amendment



The Senate Judiciary Committee amendment provides that the probation program shall operate in San Juan county alone. The amendment changes the appropriation from $240.0 to $140.0 in recurring general fund.



Synopsis of Bill



Senate Bill 273 appropriates $240.0 in recurring general fund for FY2000 to the Administrative Office of the Courts to purchase equipment, lease office space and pay full-time employees to operate adult misdemeanor probation programs in San Juan, Eddy and Valencia counties.



Significant Issues



According to AOC analysis, the pilot Adult Misdemeanor Probation Program has been operating in the Farmington magistrate court for over a year, having been started by a single volunteer retired probation officer. After initial start-up costs, costs of the program will be assessed to convicted defendants.
