SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 232 appropriates $80,000 from the general fund to the New Mexico Office of Indian Affairs for the purpose of contracting to develop a community business and economic development plan for Mexican Springs in McKinley County.

Significant Issues

Mexican Springs is located between Gallup and Shiprock in McKinley County. The community is rural in nature and has a population of approximately 6,000 people with a workforce unemployment rate of 80%.

The appropriation in Senate Bill 232 would assist the community of Mexican Springs in developing a community business and economic development plan that would enhance their infrastructure and employment opportunities.

FISCAL IMPLICATIONS

There would be minimal fiscal and administrative impact on the Office of Indian Affairs. OIA would contract the services of a provider to develop the business and economic development plan.
