SUMMARY

Synopsis of Bill

Senate Bill 168 appropriates $230,000 from the general fund to the Office of Indian Affairs to provide daycare services for approximately ninety children of various ages in Tohatchi in McKinley County.

Significant Issues

The community of Tohatchi is located in the northwest corner of New Mexico within the boundaries of the Navajo Nation. Therefore, the services and program would be within the jurisdiction of the Navajo government. Daycare services are not currently available in Tohatchi.

ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS

There would be minimal administrative impact on the Office of Indian Affairs. The services would be either contracted or provided by a Joint Powers Agreement.

POSSIBLE QUESTIONS

· What licensing, rules or regulations would be required for the daycare services in Tohatchi?

· Does the County of McKinley or the State of New Mexico presently offer day care services in the close vicinity of Tohatchi?
