SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
This bill appropriates $100.0 to the Board of Regents of the New Mexico State University for the purpose of increasing the base budget of the alliance for minority participation and the regional alliance for science, mathematics, engineering and technology for students with disabilities programs. The programs are aimed to improve student retention through mentoring, internships and assistantships.
Significant Issues
According to the CHE, the projects indicated in this bill are collaborative projects directed to increase the number of baccalaureate degrees awarded to under represented minorities and remove barriers for students with disabilities. NMSU ranked these projects 6th of eleven special project requests.
According to the SDE, there is a need to increase the participation of students with disabilities in science, math, engineering and technology programs as dropout rates for these students are higher than for students without disabilities.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
The appropriation of $100.0 contained in this bill is a recurring expense to the general fund. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of FY00 shall revert to the general fund.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
According to the CHE, the combined project request adds .75 FTE.
