SUMMARY
Synopsis of Bill
House Bill 722 appropriates $600.0 from the general fund to SDE for the purpose of contracting for the provision of statewide vocational programs for students, including business education programs, marketing programs, agricultural education programs, family and consumer sciences programs, trades and industry programs and technology education programs.
Significant Issues
According to SDE, this bill would provide funding for state leadership activities to support vocational and technical education programs at secondary and post-secondary institutions throughout the state. These leadership activities increase the relevance of instruction; extend learning opportunities within and beyond the classroom where students demonstrate leadership and vocational-technical skills through performance based activities; and provide opportunities for students to receive scholarships and participate in national offices on the local, state and national levels.
FISCAL IMPLICATIONS
House Bill 722 appropriates $600.0 from the general fund to SDE for expenditure in fiscal year 2000. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2000 shall revert to the general fund.
SDE indicates that current funding for vocational and technical education programs are supported by set aside funds from the federal Carl D. Perkins grant.
ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS
SDE indicates that the activities specified in the bill are currently accomplished by the department.
