SUMMARY



Synopsis of Bill



The bill appropriates $140.0 from the general fund to the State Department of Education for the purpose of contracting with a statewide non-profit provider for implementing a dropout prevention program in the Gadsden School District. Any unexpended or unencumbered balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 2000 reverts to the general fund.



Significant Issues



The school districts high school dropout rate of 13.3% exceeds the state average of 7.8%.



This appropriation would provide:

This appropriation is in addition to funds LEA's receive through the at-risk factor of the funding formula.



ADMINISTRATIVE IMPLICATIONS



A new project would be created for SDE. SDE specifies that the current staff can handle the project if a significant number of other special projects are not approved thru the legislative process.
