RELATING TO HIGHWAYS; REDESIGNATING UNITED STATES ROUTE 66; REQUIRING THE IDENTIFICATION AND SURVEY OF STATE AND LOCAL SIGNS ALONG HISTORIC UNITED STATES ROUTE 66.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
Section 1. HIGHWAYS--UNITED STATES ROUTE 66--REDESIGNATION.--All remaining portions of former United States route 66 that are currently used in New Mexico shall be designated as "New Mexico Route 66".
Section 2. TEMPORARY PROVISION--HIGHWAYS--UNITED STATES ROUTE 66--SIGNS.--The state highway and transportation department shall conduct an inventory of all former United States route 66 signs and replace all state designation signs, excluding historic signs and markers, with signs reading "New Mexico Route 66". The state highway and transportation department shall complete its survey and replacement of all signs prior to January 1, 2001 in celebration of the seventy-fifth anniversary of United States route 66.
