A MEMORIAL

REQUESTING EMPLOYERS TO CONDITION EMPLOYMENT OF TEENAGERS ON SATISFACTORY GRADES.

WHEREAS, it is important for high school students to maintain satisfactory grades and focus on their education so that they will graduate from high school and be well prepared for post-secondary education or jobs; and

WHEREAS, many high school students are employed after school or on weekends to earn money and this takes time away from homework and school pursuits; and

WHEREAS, employers could join parents in supervising the impact of employment on high school students' educational achievement by making the receipt of satisfactory grades a condition of employment for high school students; and

WHEREAS, if high school students with failing grades were temporarily suspended from employment for a quarter or semester to focus on their classwork and raise their grades, this should enable them to raise their grades satisfactorily and graduate from high school;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it urge employers in the state who employ high school students part-time to base that employment upon the students maintaining satisfactory grades; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be given to the association of commerce and industry in New Mexico, to each chamber of commerce in New Mexico and to the superintendent of public instruction for distribution to each school district and parent-teacher association in the state.
