HONORING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE NATIONAL URBAN LEAGUE AND WELCOMING THE FORMATION OF THE NEW MEXICO URBAN LEAGUE TO THE MULTICULTURAL FABRIC OF NEW MEXICO.
WHEREAS, the national urban league is an interracial, nonpartisan-nonprofit community service organization employing social work, economic law, business management and other techniques to secure social and economic equity for persons of all races; and
WHEREAS, the national urban league has existed since 1910 assisting persons in thirty-four states across the country to achieve full citizen participation in the opportunities of this democratic society; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the new New Mexico affiliate of the urban league is to assist the state by advocating public policies that improve the well-being of the state's citizens; and
WHEREAS, the New Mexico urban league's charge is to build bridges of understanding in an integrated and pluralistic society, and to increase public awareness and understanding of the conditions of its constituency and to advocate appropriate initiatives; and
WHEREAS, the New Mexico urban league, through its program services emphasizes the importance of addressing the individual and the family in the whole perspective of their lives, and provides technical assistance to empower neighborhoods and communities to fulfill their roles and responsibilities;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the new New Mexico urban league affiliate of the national urban league is welcomed to our state as a constructive vehicle to promote healthy change and full social and economic participation for all New Mexicans; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the New Mexico urban league be encouraged to develop and expand programs designed to strengthen growth and development and to identify the needs of its constituency; to establish plans and work with existing institutions to make them more responsive; to organize and mobilize minority communities in developing alternatives to inadequate and ineffective systems; and to work to strengthen those institutions committed to ensuring effective delivery of services to all citizens of New Mexico; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be sent to the New Mexico urban league.
