It is proposed to amend Article 4, Section 4 | 0017| of the constitution of New Mexico to read: | 0018| "A. Members of the legislature shall be elected | 0019| as follows: [those senators from Bernalillo, Chaves, Curry, | 0020| DeBaca, Grant, Lea, Lincoln, Luna, Sandoval, San Juan, San | 0021| Miguel, Socorro, Taos, Torrance, Union and Valencia counties | 0022| for a term of six years starting January 1, 1961, and after | 0023| serving such terms shall be elected for a term of four years | 0024| thereafter; those senators from all other counties for the | 0025| terms of four years, and] |

0001| (1) members of the senate elected at the | 0002| general election in 2000 shall be divided by lot, in a manner | 0003| determined by the senate, into two classes of twenty-one seats | 0004| in each class. Members of the senate in class one shall be | 0005| elected for a term of two years at the general election in | 0006| 2000 and after serving the two-year term shall be elected for | 0007| a term of four years at subsequent elections. Members of the | 0008| senate in class two shall be elected for a term of four years | 0009| at the general election in 2000 and in subsequent elections; | 0010| and | 0011| (2) members of the house of representatives | 0012| shall be elected for a term of two years. [They] | 0013| B. Members of the legislature shall be elected | 0014| on the day provided by law for holding the general election of | 0015| state officers or representatives in congress. | 0016| C. If a vacancy occurs in the office of senator | 0017| or member of the house of representatives, for any reason, the | 0018| county commissioners of the county wherein the vacancy occurs | 0019| shall fill such vacancy by appointment. | 0020| D. Such legislative appointments as provided in | 0021| this section shall be for a term ending on December 31, | 0022| subsequent to the next succeeding general election." | 0023| Section 2.
