CARRARO | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A MEMORIAL | 0011| REQUESTING THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO MAKE | 0012| RECOMMENDATIONS FOR EXPANDING THE CHARTER SCHOOLS ACT. | 0013| | 0014| WHEREAS, the Charter Schools Act has allowed a limited | 0015| number of individual public schools in New Mexico to become | 0016| charter schools and initiate innovative changes in teaching | 0017| methods and budgeting; and | 0018| WHEREAS, the flexibility allowed by the Charter Schools | 0019| Act is available to only a few schools due to limits in the | 0020| current law; and | 0021| WHEREAS, there are many schools and local school | 0022| districts that could utilize the flexibility allowed by the | 0023| Charter School Act to modify the organization and operation of | 0024| their schools to meet the unique needs of their student | 0025| population and respond to the challenges and opportunities |

0001| presented by the communities they serve; | 0002| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE | 0003| OF NEW MEXICO that the state board of education be requested | 0004| to make recommendations to the legislative education study | 0005| committee on ways in which the Charter Schools Act can be | 0006| amended to address the needs and concerns of individual | 0007| schools and local school districts that want to acquire | 0008| charter status; and | 0009| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be | 0010| transmitted to the state board of education and the director | 0011| of the legislative education study committee. | 0012|  | 0013| | 0014| | 0015| |
