0011| IN MEMORY OF WILMA BERRY, WIFE OF FORMER REPRESENTATIVE DAN

0014| WHEREAS, Wilma "Burrie" Berry, wife of former
|
0015| Representative Dan Berry, died December 18, 1997; and
|
0016| WHEREAS, she was born September 23, 1923 in Post, Texas
|
0017| and married Dan on January 1, 1943 in Pampa, Texas; and
|
0018| WHEREAS, she moved to the Berry ranch in 1946 and was a
|
0019| homemaker, a member of the First United Methodist church and
|
0020| the Eunice chamber of commerce and the secretary for the
|
0021| American junior rodeo association for many years; and
|
0022| WHEREAS, she was named Eunice's citizen of the year for
|
0023| 1987-88; and
|
0024| WHEREAS, Wilma was a loyal friend who cared passionately
|
0025| about her family, her community and her state and was a strong
|

0001| advocate for the ranching life and values of rural New Mexico;
|
0002| and
|
0003| WHEREAS, the old hands at the legislature remember Wilma
|
0004| playing cards in the lounge with the other wives, one ear on
|
0005| the game and the other one attending to the floor action, or
|
0006| sitting patiently in the legislative council service waiting
|
0007| for Dan's interim committee meeting to end; and
|
0008| WHEREAS, Wilma Berry was one of the few people who was
|
0009| allowed to get away with questioning a legislator's vote, and
|
0010| not just her husband's; and
|
0011| WHEREAS, she made the best chile beans and hot rolls
|
0012| around, and there are still folks in the legislature, house
|
0013| and senate, democrat and republican, who remember sitting
|
0014| around after a hard day's work, eating and laughing and
|
0015| relaxing over Wilma's down-home food; and
|
0016| WHEREAS, Wilma is survived by a loving family, including
|
0017| her husband Dan, sons Danny and Phillip, brother Jim, sisters
|
0018| Mary, Maxine and Jennie and her four grandchildren to whom she
|
0019| was devoted; and
|
0020| WHEREAS, she is remembered fondly by legislators, staff,
|
0021| lobbyists and the many other friends she had in Santa Fe;
|
0022| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0023| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that heartfelt condolences be extended to
|
0024| the friends and family of Wilma "Burrie" Berry, an outstanding
|
0025| and devoted New Mexican; and
|

0002| sent to Representative Dan Berry and the Berry family.
