0011|     REQUESTING PUBLIC SCHOOLS IN NEW MEXICO TO HONOR VETERANS AND

0012|     RECOGNIZE AMERICA'S DEBT TO OUR MILITARY HEROES ON VETERANS

0013|     DAY OR OTHER APPROPRIATE PATRIOTIC HOLIDAYS OR OCCASIONS.

0015|          WHEREAS, the public schools do not celebrate veterans day
    |
0016|     as a school holiday; and
    |
0017|          WHEREAS, veterans day or other patriotic holidays or
    |
0018|     occasions offer a very appropriate opportunity to help our
    |
0019|     schoolchildren recognize and honor the contribution of the
    |
0020|     veterans of American armed forces who have sacrificed so much
    |
0021|     to protect the freedom and way of life we all enjoy; and
    |
0022|          WHEREAS, patriotic holidays offer public schools a chance
    |
0023|     to teach our children about the price of American freedom, the
    |
0024|     wars that have been fought to protect that freedom and the
    |
0025|     stories of the men and women who have made the ultimate
    |

0001|     sacrifice for that freedom with their lives; and

0002|          WHEREAS, by teaching the real history of our country, our
    |
0003|     children will learn to appreciate the need to remain ever
    |
0004|     vigilant, if we are to protect the American way of life;
    |
0005|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
    |
0006|     REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that it urge the
    |
0007|     state board of education and the state department of public
    |
0008|     education to encourage school districts to plan special
    |
0009|     instruction and programs to honor veterans and their role in
    |
0010|     American history on veterans day or other patriotic holidays
    |
0011|     or occasions; and
    |
0012|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be
    |
0013|     transmitted to the chairman of the state board of education
    |
0014|     and to the state department of public education for
    |
0015|     distribution to every school district in the state.
