0011|     REQUESTING THE STATE BOARD EDUCATION TO MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS

0012|     FOR EXPANDING THE CHARTER SCHOOLS ACT.

0014|          WHEREAS, the Charter Schools Act has allowed a limited
    |
0015|     number of individual public schools in New Mexico to become
    |
0016|     charter schools and initiate innovative changes in teaching
    |
0017|     methods and budgeting; and
    |
0018|          WHEREAS, the flexibility allowed by the Charter Schools
    |
0019|     Act is available to only a few schools due to limits in the
    |
0020|     current law; and
    |
0021|          WHEREAS, there are many schools and local school
    |
0022|     districts which could utilize the flexibility allowed by the
    |
0023|     Charter School Act to modify the organization and operation of
    |
0024|     their schools to meet the unique needs of their student
    |
0025|     population and respond to the challenges and opportunities
    |

0002|          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
    |
0003|     REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state
    |
0004|     board of education be requested to make recommendations to the
    |
0005|     legislative education study committee on ways in which the
    |
0006|     Charter Schools Act can be amended to address the needs and
    |
0007|     concerns of individual schools and local school districts that
    |
0008|     want to acquire charter status; and
    |
0009|          BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
    |
0010|     transmitted to the state board of education and the director
    |
0011|     of the legislative education study committee.
