SANCHEZ | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0011| DECLARING THE YEAR 1998 AS THE YEAR OF THE CUARTOCENTENARIO. | 0012| | 0013| WHEREAS, the first Hispanic settlement in New Mexico was | 0014| established in 1598 under Spain and by permission of King | 0015| Felipe II; and | 0016| WHEREAS, the first Hispanic settlement took place at San | 0017| Juan de los Caballeros at San Juan Pueblo under Governor and | 0018| Captain General don Juan de Onate; and | 0019| WHEREAS, many New Mexicans today trace their ancestry | 0020| from that Spanish colony; and | 0021| WHEREAS, at least as late as 1607, a party led by Captain | 0022| Juan Martinez de Montoya founded la Villa de Santa Fe, which | 0023| became the permanent capital of New Mexico in 1610; and | 0024| WHEREAS, for four hundred years the people of New Mexico | 0025| have survived together, Hispanics and pueblo Indians living |
