Section 29-2-6 NMSA 1978 (being Laws 1941, | 0018| Chapter 147, Section 6, as amended) is amended to read: | 0019| "29-2-6. QUALIFICATIONS OF MEMBERS.-- | 0020| A. Members of the New Mexico state police, except | 0021| the chief, shall: | 0022| (1) at the time of their appointment, be | 0023| citizens of the United States; | 0024| (2) at the time of their appointment, have | 0025| reached twenty-one years of age; | - 1 - 0001| ~[(3) have at least a high school education | 0002| or its equivalent;]~ | 0003| |(3) at the time of their appointment, have | 0004| completed not less than sixty hours of college credit|; | 0005| (4) be of good moral character and not have | 0006| been convicted of a felony or ~[any]~ infamous crime in the | 0007| courts of this state or ~[any]~ other state or |any| country | 0008| or in the federal courts; and | 0009| (5) ~[successfully]~ pass ~[any]~ |a| | 0010| physical examination the New Mexico state police may require. | 0011| B. ~[No]~ |A| person ||shall |not| be | 0012| commissioned a member of the New Mexico state police who is | 0013| related by blood or marriage within the fourth degree to | 0014| ~[any]~ |a| member of the ~[department of]~ public safety | 0015| advisory commission." | 0016| Section 2. APPROPRIATION.--Four million seventy-three | 0017| thousand four hundred dollars ($4,073,400) is appropriated | 0018| from the general fund to the department of public safety for | 0019| expenditure in fiscal year 1999 for the purpose of providing | 0020| all state police officers with a salary increase, subject to | 0021| satisfactory job performance. Any unexpended or unencumbered | 0022| balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 1999 shall revert | 0023| to the general fund. | 0024| Section 3. EFFECTIVE DATE.--The effective date of the | 0025| provisions of this act is July 1, 1998. | - 2 - 0001|  |
