KNOWLES | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| FOR THE LEGISLATIVE FINANCE COMMITTEE | 0009| | 0010| AN ACT | 0011| RELATING TO LAW ENFORCEMENT; PROVIDING THAT CERTAIN APPOINTEES | 0012| TO THE NEW MEXICO STATE POLICE MAY ATTEND A SHORTENED | 0013| INSTRUCTION PERIOD PRIOR TO BEGINNING THEIR DUTIES; AMENDING A | 0014| SECTION OF THE NMSA 1978. | 0015| | 0016| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO: | 0017| Section 1. Section 29-2-16 NMSA 1978 (being Laws 1941, | 0018| Chapter 147, Section 15, as amended) is amended to read: | 0019| "29-2-16. STATE POLICE SCHOOL--COMPENSATION.-- | 0020| A. Before entering upon his duties, every | 0021| appointee to the New Mexico state police shall be required to | 0022| attend for a period of at least ninety days a school of | 0023| instruction approved by the [New Mexico state police board] | 0024| chief of the state police. The chief may approve a shortened | 0025| instruction period for appointees who possess a degree in |

0001| police science or its equivalent from an accredited college or | 0002| who have been certified by the New Mexico law enforcement | 0003| academy. A uniform course of instruction shall be given all | 0004| trainees governing the operation, maintenance and temporary | 0005| roadside repair of motor vehicles; the laws of the state which | 0006| the appointee may be called on to enforce; and other | 0007| instruction as the [New Mexico state police board] chief of | 0008| the state police may require. Attendance at the school or | 0009| other course of instruction as may be prescribed renders the | 0010| person attending subject to the control of the New Mexico | 0011| state police during attendance. | 0012| B. The New Mexico state police board may, within | 0013| the budgetary means of the New Mexico state police, allow | 0014| subsistence and compensation for trainees attending the school | 0015| of instruction at the New Mexico state police headquarters or | 0016| elsewhere. The compensation allowed for each trainee, | 0017| excluding room and board for a thirty-day period, shall be in | 0018| the amount set by the legislature in the general | 0019| [appropriations] appropriation act." | 0020| Section 2. EFFECTIVE DATE.--The effective date of the | 0021| provisions of this act is July 1, 1998. | 0022|  |
