TAYLOR | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| AN ACT | 0011| MAKING AN APPROPRIATION FOR A PILOT PROJECT TO MONITOR PUBLIC | 0012| SCHOOL ATTENDANCE. | 0013| | 0014| BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO: | 0015| Section 1. APPROPRIATION.-- | 0016| A. One hundred seventy-five thousand dollars | 0017| ($175,000) is appropriated from the general fund to the | 0018| attorney general's office for expenditure in fiscal year 1999 | 0019| to conduct a pilot project to monitor mandatory attendance in | 0020| the public schools of the south region of the Albuquerque | 0021| public school district. Any unexpended or unencumbered | 0022| balance remaining at the end of fiscal year 1999 shall revert | 0023| to the general fund. | 0024| B. The attorney general's office shall receive | 0025| attendance reports from the public schools in the south region |

0001| of the Albuquerque public school district and shall monitor | 0002| attendance of the students. The attorney general's office | 0003| shall write the parent or guardian of each student with poor | 0004| attendance, notifying the parent or guardian that the student | 0005| may be at risk of failing or dropping out of school due to | 0006| poor attendance and that the school is expecting the parent or | 0007| guardian to make an appointment to discuss problems the | 0008| student may be having. The attorney general's office shall | 0009| monitor the student, his family and the school to ensure that | 0010| resources are being applied to minimize the student's risk of | 0011| dropping out. | 0012| C. In conducting the pilot project, the attorney | 0013| general shall work closely with the Albuquerque public | 0014| schools, the children, youth and families department and the | 0015| state department of public education. | 0016|  |
