0011| PROPOSING TO AMEND THE CONSTITUTION OF NEW MEXICO TO PROHIBIT

0012| SECOND-TERM COUNTY OFFICIALS FROM HOLDING ADDITIONAL COUNTY
|
0013| OFFICES.

0015| BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
|
0016| Section 1. It is proposed to amend Article 10, Section 2
|
0017| of the constitution of New Mexico to read:
|
0018| "A. In every county all elected officials shall
|
0019| serve four-year terms, subject to the provisions of Subsection
|
0020| B of this section.
|
0021| B. In those counties that prior to 1992 have not
|
0022| had four-year terms for elected officials, the assessor,
|
0023| sheriff and probate judge shall be elected to four-year terms
|
0024| and the treasurer and clerk shall be elected to two-year terms
|
0025| in the first election following the adoption of this amendment.
|
0001| In subsequent elections, the treasurer and clerk shall be
|
0002| elected to four-year terms.
|
0003| C. To provide for staggered county commission
|
0004| terms, in counties with three county commissioners, the terms
|
0005| of no more than two commissioners shall expire in the same
|
0006| year; and in counties with five county commissioners, the terms
|
0007| of no more than three commissioners shall expire in the same
|
0008| year.
|
0009| D. All county officers, after having served two
|
0010| consecutive four-year terms, shall be ineligible to hold any
|
0011| [public] county office for two years thereafter."
|
0012| Section 2. The amendment proposed by this resolution
|
0013| shall be submitted to the people for their approval or
|
0014| rejection at the next general election or at any special
|
0015| election prior to that date which may be called for that
|
0016| purpose.
