LYONS | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0011| REQUESTING THE CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES DEPARTMENT TO STUDY | 0012| THE POTENTIAL FOR THE USE OF HORSES IN THE THERAPY AND CARE OF | 0013| CHILDREN FROM ABUSIVE FAMILIES. | 0014| | 0015| WHEREAS, child victims of abuse have been so traumatized | 0016| that reinitiating social relations and reentering the world of | 0017| relatively normal human relationships is very difficult and | 0018| fear inducing; and | 0019| WHEREAS, animal therapy has been demonstrated to offer | 0020| positive effects on abused children, lessening the immediate | 0021| trauma; and | 0022| WHEREAS, a study of children in the battered families | 0023| facility in Clovis, New Mexico has shown that nine years of | 0024| experience with the Hebron Arabians has helped children | 0025| involved in the program refocus their emotional experiences | 0001| away from the traumatic to the healing afforded by animal | 0002| therapy; | 0003| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE | 0004| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the children, youth and families | 0005| department be requested to study the potential for using horses | 0006| to help children who have been victimized by abuse to | 0007| recuperate from their emotional experiences and reintegrate | 0008| with society; and | 0009| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the children, youth and | 0010| families department report its findings and recommendations to | 0011| the appropriate interim legislative committee by December 1, | 0012| 1997; and | 0013| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be | 0014| transmitted to the secretary of children, youth and families. | 0015|  | 0016| | 0017| FORTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE | 0018| FIRST SESSION, 1997 | 0019| | 0020| | 0021| March 18, 1997 | 0022| | 0023| Mr. President: | 0024| | 0025| Your CONSERVATION COMMITTEE, to whom has been referred | 0001| | 0002| SENATE JOINT MEMORIAL 69 | 0003| | 0004| has had it under consideration and reports same with | 0005| recommendation that it DO PASS. | 0006| | 0007| Respectfully submitted, | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| | 0011| | 0012| __________________________________ | 0013| Michael S.
