ARAGON | 0005| | 0006| | 0007| | 0008| | 0009| | 0010| A JOINT MEMORIAL | 0011| EXPRESSING THE CONDOLENCE OF THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF | 0012| NEW MEXICO TO THE FAMILY OF GENE GILBERT. | 0013| | 0014| WHEREAS, Gene Gilbert died on August 18, 1996; and | 0015| WHEREAS, he had served as Bernalillo county commissioner | 0016| from district 3 since 1988, always as an energetic participant | 0017| in county government and in the democratic party; and | 0018| WHEREAS, he was born and raised in Belen and served in | 0019| Vietnam where he earned the purple heart and the army | 0020| commendation medal; and | 0021| WHEREAS, Gene Gilbert also served on the New Mexico | 0022| veterans' service commission under Governor Toney Anaya and was | 0023| a major force behind the establishment of a veterans' hospital | 0024| in Truth or Consequences; and | 0025| WHEREAS, he lobbied hard for the state scholarship program | 0001| for Vietnam veterans and played a major role in the 1986 | 0002| expansion of the veterans' cemetery in which he is now buried; | 0003| and | 0004| WHEREAS, Gene Gilbert, a former city environmental | 0005| attorney, was a strong advocate for regionalism, the gathering | 0006| together of communities in the metropolitan area to plan and | 0007| deal with transportation, water and air quality issues; and | 0008| WHEREAS, Albuquerque Mayor Martin Chavez said each hour | 0009| Gene Gilbert spent was a pebble cast upon the water and we will | 0010| never know the full extent of his public service; and | 0011| WHEREAS, fellow democrat and Commission Chairman Al Valdez | 0012| spoke of Gene Gilbert's wisdom and care and how many hearts he | 0013| touched in the course of his life; and | 0014| WHEREAS, he is survived by three daughters and a grandson, | 0015| his parents, two brothers, two sisters and many aunts, uncles, | 0016| nieces, nephews and friends; | 0017| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE | 0018| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that heartfelt condolence be extended to | 0019| the family and friends of Gene Gilbert, a loving and devoted | 0020| New Mexican; and | 0021| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be | 0022| transmitted to the family of Gene Gilbert. | 0023|  |
