0011| REQUESTING THE NEW MEXICO LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TO PARTICIPATE IN
|
0012| THE NATIONAL CONFERENCE OF STATE LEGISLATURES' PROJECT CITIZEN.

0014| WHEREAS, the national conference of state legislatures and
|
0015| the center for civic education co-sponsor project citizen, a
|
0016| project helping teach middle school students how to identify
|
0017| and deal with public policy problems in their communities; and
|
0018| WHEREAS, project citizen shows students how to gather
|
0019| information, conduct interviews, develop action plans and
|
0020| encourage elected officials to adopt proposed solutions; and
|
0021| WHEREAS, participating students have addressed a wide
|
0022| range of issues, including gang prevention, graffiti, school
|
0023| overcrowding, censorship and dress codes; and
|
0024| WHEREAS, schools in eleven states participated in project
|
0025| citizen last year; and
|
0001| WHEREAS, negative public attitudes toward legislatures and
|
0002| government in general can be positively responded to by support
|
0003| for education of and involvement by young people in their
|
0004| government;
|
0005| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0006| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the New Mexico legislative council
|
0007| participate with the national conference of state legislatures
|
0008| and the center for civic education in project citizen; and
|
0009| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0010| transmitted to the co-chairmen of the New Mexico legislative
|
0011| council.
