0011| REQUESTING THAT THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC EDUCATION

0012| CONDUCT A STUDY TO DETERMINE HOW TO ADDRESS THE STUDENT DROPOUT

0013| PROBLEM AND TO OBJECTIVELY DEFINE ZERO TOLERANCE.

0015| WHEREAS, students who drop out of school do not have
|
0016| alternative educational opportunities available to them; and
|
0017| WHEREAS, school districts should direct money towards
|
0018| creating alternative educational opportunities for student
|
0019| dropouts; and
|
0020| WHEREAS, students are expelled or suspended pursuant to a
|
0021| subjective definition of zero tolerance; and
|
0022| WHEREAS, a student has the right to understand clearly the
|
0023| basis for expulsion or suspension;
|
0024| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0025| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the state department of public
|
0001| education study options to keep students from dropping out of
|
0002| the public school system; and
|
0003| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the state department of public
|
0004| education shall define zero tolerance; and
|
0005| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0006| transmitted to the state department of public education and to
|
0007| the state board of education.
