0011| REQUESTING THE SUPREME COURT TO ADOPT A RULE REQUIRING ALL

0012| JUDGES TO RECEIVE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE TRAINING AS PART OF THEIR

0013| JUDICIAL EDUCATION.

0015| WHEREAS, ninety-five percent of domestic violence victims
|
0016| are women; and
|
0017| WHEREAS, forty-six percent of female homicides in New
|
0018| Mexico are the result of domestic abuse and over one-third of
|
0019| those victims had reported prior injuries; and
|
0020| WHEREAS, the attorney general's task force on violence
|
0021| against women, the New Mexico domestic violence advisory
|
0022| council and the New Mexico medical society have studied issues
|
0023| related to domestic violence and determined that judicial
|
0024| training would help address the problem; and
|
0025| WHEREAS, the court is the single most important impetus
|
0001| for change and successful enforcement of current laws to
|
0002| protect victims of domestic violence; and
|
0003| WHEREAS, several states require judicial training in
|
0004| domestic violence law;
|
0005| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0006| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the supreme court be requested to
|
0007| adopt a rule that requires judicial training in domestic
|
0008| violence law and victim assistance; and
|
0009| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0010| transmitted to the justices of the supreme court.
