0011| REQUESTING SCHOOL SYSTEMS IN NEW MEXICO TO ADOPT THE EDDIE

0012| EAGLE GUN SAFETY PROGRAM OF THE NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION WITH
|
0013| A VIEW TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL FIREARM-RELATED INJURIES TO
|
0014| CHILDREN.

0016| WHEREAS, teaching children to act safely around firearms
|
0017| is a critical step in the effort to reduce the number of
|
0018| firearm-related accidents among children; and
|
0019| WHEREAS, the Eddie Eagle gun safety program teaches the
|
0020| fundamentals of firearms safety to elementary school-aged
|
0021| children in an effective and enjoyable way, communicating to
|
0022| them the lifesaving message offered by the program: "If you
|
0023| see a gun, STOP! Don't touch. Leave the area. Tell an
|
0024| adult."; and
|
0025| WHEREAS, the nationally-recognized Eddie Eagle gun safety
|
0001| program materials are available free or at nominal cost to
|
0002| schools and police departments and have been used by more than
|
0003| eight thousand public or private schools and two thousand five
|
0004| hundred law enforcement agencies to reach over eight million
|
0005| six hundred thousand children since 1988; and
|
0006| WHEREAS, the Eddie Eagle gun safety program has been
|
0007| presented the 1994 golden achievement award of the national
|
0008| school public relations association, the 1995 national
|
0009| education award of the American legion and the 1996 award of
|
0010| merit from the national safety council's awards and recognition
|
0011| committee of the youth activities division;
|
0012| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0013| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that civic and community service
|
0014| organizations are requested to foster the safety and well-being
|
0015| of the children of our state and help implement the Eddie Eagle
|
0016| gun safety program at the local level; and
|
0017| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the state department of public
|
0018| education be requested to promote the use of the Eddie Eagle
|
0019| gun safety program in our schools to help prevent firearm-
|
0020| related accidents among children; and
|
0021| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be
|
0022| transmitted to the state department of public education.
