0012|     URGING THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC EDUCATION AND SCHOOL

0013|     DISTRICTS TO HAVE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR VIOLENCE IN THE SCHOOLS.

0015|       WHEREAS, there are daily occurrences of violence in public
    |
0016|     schools in New Mexico, with students attacking or intimidating
    |
0017|     other students and assaulting school personnel; and
    |
0018|       WHEREAS, vandalism against school property is also becoming
    |
0019|     a daily event; and
    |
0020|       WHEREAS, children cannot learn in an environment of fear;
    |
0021|     and
    |
0022|       WHEREAS, children and their parents have a right to expect
    |
0023|     that going to school is not a life-threatening experience;
    |
0024|       NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE
    |
0025|     OF NEW MEXICO that it urge the state department of public
    |
0001|     education and public school districts throughout New Mexico to
    |
0002|     have zero tolerance for students choosing to harm, assault,
    |
0003|     injure or maim other students or school personnel on school
    |
0004|     property; and
    |
0005|       BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that it encourage the state
    |
0006|     department of public education and public school districts to
    |
0007|     take all reasonable steps to eradicate violence on public school
    |
0008|     property, whether committed by students or other persons; and
    |
0009|       BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be sent
    |
0010|     to the superintendent of public instruction and public school
    |
0011|     districts.
