0012| REQUESTING THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT AND THE TOURISM

0013| DEPARTMENT TO ASSIST EFFORTS BY THE PRIVATE SECTOR TO ESTABLISH

0014| PASSENGER TRAIN SERVICE BETWEEN NEW MEXICO AND MEXICO.

0016| WHEREAS, Recursos de Santa Fe, an educational nonprofit
|
0017| organization, is coordinating an educational seminar on a
|
0018| passenger train called the American orient express that would
|
0019| travel between Santa Fe, New Mexico and Mexico City, Mexico via
|
0020| the Camino Real; and
|
0021| WHEREAS, Recursos de Santa Fe would staff the train with
|
0022| presenters who would lecture on economic, social and cultural
|
0023| conditions related to doing business with Mexico; and
|
0024| WHEREAS, space on the train would be made available to key
|
0025| governmental and business representatives from New Mexico who
|
0001| would benefit from the educational program, in exchange for
|
0002| private or public sponsorship; and
|
0003| WHEREAS, the return trip and associated educational program
|
0004| would be structured for Mexican businessmen interested in doing
|
0005| business in New Mexico and the United States and would end in
|
0006| Santa Fe with a reception for them attended by New Mexican
|
0007| businessmen and elected officials; and
|
0008| WHEREAS, Recursos de Santa Fe is generating underwriting by
|
0009| private corporations and public entities sympathetic to
|
0010| international economic development; and
|
0011| WHEREAS, the successful implementation of this inaugural
|
0012| trip would open the door and the border to regular passenger
|
0013| excursions between Santa Fe and Mexico City with resultant
|
0014| economic benefits for both countries; and
|
0015| WHEREAS, the trips will coincide with the four hundredth
|
0016| anniversary of the Camino Real, which was a historic trade route
|
0017| that linked Santa Fe with Mexico City;
|
0018| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0019| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that Recursos de Santa Fe's is efforts in
|
0020| supporting international economic development and partnership
|
0021| with Mexico be recognized and that the economic development
|
0022| department and the tourism department provide assistance
|
0023| wherever possible; and
|
0024| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the state highway and
|
0025| transportation department provide and support the implementation
|
0001| of a rail border crossing from its current bottleneck situation
|
0002| in Juarez, Mexico and El Paso, Texas to Santa Teresa, New
|
0003| Mexico; and
|
0004| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0005| transmitted to the secretaries of economic development, tourism
|
0006| and highway and transportation.
