0012| REQUESTING THE CITY OF ALBUQUERQUE TO CONSIDER CHANGING THE

0013| SPELLING OF ALBUQUERQUE TO THE ORIGINAL SPELLING.

0015| WHEREAS, Albuquerque was originally spelled "Alburquerque"
|
0016| like that of a city once in Portugal, which is now located in
|
0017| the province of Badajoz, Spain about ten miles east of the
|
0018| Portuguese border; and
|
0019| WHEREAS, the records of New Mexico's twenty-eighth colonial
|
0020| governor, Don Francisco Cuervo y Valdez, state that in the early
|
0021| part of 1706 the governor founded a villa that he named San
|
0022| Francisco de Alburquerque in honor of Don Francisco Fernandez de
|
0023| la Cueva Enriquez, Duque de Alburquerque, the thirty-fourth
|
0024| Viceroy of New Spain, then residing in Mexico City. Don
|
0025| Francisco Fernandez was the second titled Duke of Alburquerque
|
0001| to serve as Viceroy of New Spain and was tenth in succession
|
0002| from the first Duke of Alburquerque, Don Beltran de la Cueva,
|
0003| who received the Portuguese dukedom in 1464 from King Enrique
|
0004| IV; and
|
0005| WHEREAS, the spelling "Alburquerque" appears in the report
|
0006| of the Marques de Altamira to the auditor general of war, dated
|
0007| September 16, 1750; and
|
0008| WHEREAS, the "r" in the second syllable of the name was
|
0009| dropped by English-speaking people early in the nineteenth
|
0010| century, as the narratives of Zebulon Pike in 1807, George W.
|
0011| Kendall in 1841 and J.F. Meline in 1866 testify; and
|
0012| WHEREAS, the "r" spelling persists in Spanish documents as
|
0013| late as Escudero's Noticias in 1849;
|
0014| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0015| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the city of Albuquerque be asked to
|
0016| consider changing the spelling of Albuquerque to conform to its
|
0017| original spelling; and
|
0018| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0019| transmitted to the members of the Albuquerque city council.
