0012| REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND THE HUMAN SERVICES

0013| DEPARTMENT TO STUDY THE POTENTIAL FOR ALTERNATIVES TO NURSING

0014| HOME INSTITUTIONALIZATION FOR CUTTING THE COSTS OF LONG-TERM

0017| WHEREAS, the population of people over sixty-five will
|
0018| almost double within the first decade of the next century; and
|
0019| WHEREAS, long-term care for the aged is a significant part
|
0020| of the high cost of medical care in the country; and
|
0021| WHEREAS, these costs are significant components of
|
0022| government expenditures such as medicaid and medicare; and
|
0023| WHEREAS, health care costs represent a tremendous burden to
|
0024| American families, and alternatives to traditional forms of
|
0025| care, such as assisted living, exist and may provide better
|
0001| care;
|
0002| NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE
|
0003| STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the department of health and the human
|
0004| services department be requested to study alternatives to
|
0005| institutionalization in nursing homes for long-term care for the
|
0006| elderly and that, among these alternatives, assisted living be
|
0007| considered; and
|
0008| BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
|
0009| transmitted to the secretaries of health and human services.
