0012|     RELATING TO DISTRICT COURTS; PROVIDING FOR THE SELECTION OF THE

0013|     CHIEF JUDGE IN THE EIGHTH JUDICIAL DISTRICT; AMENDING A SECTION
    |
0014|     OF THE NMSA 1978; DECLARING AN EMERGENCY.

0016|     BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO:
    |
0017|       Section 1.  Section 34-6-11 NMSA 1978 (being Laws 1968,
    |
0018|     Chapter 69, Section 14, as amended) is amended to read:
    |
0019|       "34-6-11.  JUDGES--EIGHTH JUDICIAL DISTRICT.--There shall
    |
0020|     be two district judges in the eighth judicial district.  The
    |
0021|     judge of division one shall reside and maintain his principal
    |
0022|     office in Colfax county or Union county, and the judge of
    |
0023|     division two shall reside and maintain his principal office in
    |
0024|     Taos County. <s>[The presiding judge of the district shall be the
</s>    |
<s></s>0025| <s>    judge holding the longest term of office.]</s> <u>The chief judge of
</u>    |
<u></u>0001| <u>    the eighth judicial shall be selected by a majority of the
</u>    |
<u></u>0002| <u>    district judges in that district.  In the event of a tie, the
</u>    |
<u></u>0003| <u>    senior judge shall be the chief judge</u>."

0004|       Section 2.  EMERGENCY.--It is necessary for the public
    |
0005|     peace, health and safety that this act take effect immediately.
